Voice and Expression Lab

This is a residential workshop-laboratory for anyone who wishes to develop new work. This has application for actors, writers, movement artists and those who want to deepen their creative craft.

The process is goal-directed towards developing a ‘first draft’. Mentoring will be provided by experts and is part of the process. We will blend pedagogies of Vāchikā and Fitzmaurice Voicework® towards generating material for this first draft.

We will also explore the ‘Nava Rasa’ as building blocks to enable creative expression. This basic palette allows us to engage with the intricate and complex tapestry of emotions in daily life (Loka Dharmi) for the project of embodying a heightened presence in performance (Natya Dharmi). The purpose of introducing the participants to the Nava Rasa is to enable participants to access emotions in a safe and guided manner, and direct it towards creative exploration and expression.

Fitzmaurice Voicework® is a comprehensive, holistic approach to voice training, originally developed for actors, it’s now used in many fields to help people with a wide range of needs. Fitzmaurice Voicework® focuses on the whole human voice. It can support speaking for performance, public speaking, singing, voice with movement, vocal rehabilitation, developing greater presence, and so much more.

Selected participants will be awarded a development grant. These seed grants will allow performance first drafts emerging from the workshop to proceed into further development and production.
